When he's not making films, Emir Kusturica seizes his guitar and gets together with his band of vibrant, passionate musicians. The Serbian filmmaker, twice winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes (When Father Was Away on Business; Underground), as well as recipient of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, has found yet another outlet for his riotous humour and flamboyant exuberance, with the No Smoking Orchestra, founded by the singer Nele Karajlic. Whirling violin, tuba, saxophone and accordion, with Kusturica's own son on drums, the controlled unruliness and zany punk of this lively band's music holds more than a few surprises. Who else would think of mixing indifference and misery just for laughs!
