of the ghetto” goes to
the sources of the gypsy music
There's no place for austerity, restraint, or the slightest hint of silence in the music of this Romanian group. Mahala Raï Banda (literally the "noble band from the ghetto"), who originated in the Gypsy ghettoes around Bucharest, know exactly how to get you dancing to the sound of brass, swerving violins and accordions. Their Balkan groove, arranged by an energetic fusion of young and old (young, urban Romanian gypsy musicians joining forces with Moldavian military brass band veterans) is an irresistible mix when performed live. For Rio Loco, this frenzied Banda has teamed up with Gaetano Fabri, one of the DJs who pioneered the Balkan sound in nightclubs.
